A Milwaukee Christmas Tradition: A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at St. Paul’s

9 December

St Paul’s Episcopal Church • 914 East Knapp Street • Milwaukee • Wisconsin

On Saturday, December 9th at 4:00pm, join hundreds of Milwaukeeans in one of Milwaukee’s premiere Christmas events to reflect upon the season in Scripture, music, and prayer in the magnificent beauty of St. Paul’s Church. A venerable Milwaukee tradition, the Festival of Lessons and Carols is in its 44rd season this year. The St. Paul’s Choir, led by Music Director Timothy Benson is joined by members of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Chorus and superb guest organist Lee Erickson. The service is patterned after the Christmas Eve observance at King’s College in Cambridge, England, first held in 1918, and broadcast to millions world wide annually since 1928.

This service consists of holiday readings, carols and anthems by the likes of David Willcocks, Maurice Duruflé, John Tavener, Peter Hayward, John Scott, Morten Lauridsen, Francis Poulenc, John Gardner, Bob Chilcott, Alf Houkum, William Mathias, and others, and several traditional carols which those attending are invited to join in singing. Invite friends and neighbors to join us we usher in the Christmas Season in this most unique way—through the beauty of music in a transcendentally beautiful church as we celebrate the wonderful mystery of the Incarnation: God-become-Man! A reception with light snacks and beverages follows the service. All are welcome!
