Sung Eucharist–The Church Year

Today the Church Year ends as we celebrate the Reign of Christ. Next Sunday we begin the Church Year anew – Advent I. In Advent and Christmas we will incorporate a sung Eucharist at the 10:15 services and the late night Christmas Eve service, as well as the Sundays after Christmas. In this way, we remind ourselves a new season comes, and with it changes in liturgy. Also in Advent, we do not sing the Gloria. Instead the Kyrie is sung after the Opening Acclamation and Prayer. The liturgical color for Advent has been traditionally purple to symbolize the royalty of Jesus, and the penitential nature of the season. In recent times, to distinguish the season from Lent, a deep blue has become the liturgical color, a reminder that we are preparing for Christ’s coming anew.
